Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K & more from IBC 2019
Another year, another IBC. What can we expect to see from Blackmagic Design this year?
At IBC 2019, we will be showcasing our latest solutions for the filmmaking, post production, broadcast and live production markets, including our brand new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, UltraStudio 4K Mini capture and playback device, DaVinci Resolve 16.1 editing, grading, VFX and audio post production application, and more. Our recently announced Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K builds on the popularity of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K but has a larger Super 35 sensor size with 6K resolution, allowing higher image quality.

It is equipped with an EF lens mount and includes Blackmagic Generation 4 Color Science, which uses a complex dynamic 12-bit gamma curve designed to capture more color data in the highlights and shadows, so users get better images, and comes with DaVinci Resolve Studio. Also on display, we’ll have the UltraStudio 4K Mini, a new capture and playback solution for Thunderbolt 3 computers with 12G-SDI, HDMI, analog video and audio connections that let customers build solutions for editing, color grading, live broadcast graphics, archiving from traditional broadcast decks and live internet streaming. We’re excited to showcase DaVinci Resolve 16.1 that includes major updates to the new cut page to help create the world’s fastest editor.

New features include an improved sorting of media, a Smart Editor that adds UI feedback for intelligent edit features, a new cut clip tool for instant cutting of clips in the timeline, a Boring Detector that shows areas of the timeline that lack interest, and a Sync Bin that organizes and displays sync media for easy shot selection. We’ll also be highlighting several exciting 8K products announced at NAB earlier this year, including the ATEM Constellation 8K live production switcher, HyperDeck Extreme 8K HDR recorder and Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 8K converter. The ATEM Constellation 8K is an Ultra HD live production switcher with so many features, customers can combine them all to make an incredibly powerful 8K switcher. Customers get four M/Es, 40 x 12G-SDI inputs, 24 x 12G-SDI aux outputs, four DVEs, 16 Keyers, four media players, four multi viewers, two SuperSource and standards conversion on every SDI input. Then when switched to 8K, all these features combine to make a powerful 8K switcher. HyperDeck Extreme 8K HDR features the trusted reliability of HyperDeck combined with new innovations, such as space-saving H.265 files, optional internal cache, 3D LUTs, native 8K and HDR support. Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 8K HDR is a new advanced 8K HDMI monitoring solution with dual on-screen scope overlays, HDR, 33 point 3D LUTs and monitor calibration for professional, color accurate SDI monitoring on HDMI 8K screens. We’ll also have the URSA Mini Pro G2 camera on display.

Announced earlier this year, the URSA Mini Pro G2 features a new Super 35mm 4.6K image sensor with 15 stops of dynamic range that combine to support high frame rate shooting at up to 300 frames per second. The next generation camera supports Blackmagic RAW and features a new USB-C expansion port for direct recording to external disks, ND filters, an interchangeable lens mount, dual CFast and USH-II SD card recorders, and more.
What trends are you looking forward to exploring more at IBC?
We are looking forward to exploring 8K even further with attendees at IBC. Since the announcement of our new 8K products at NAB, we’ve had great feedback so far, and we are excited to touch base with customers at IBC to learn more about how they are finding the products. While not everyone is ready for 8K just yet, our 8K products also support HD and Ultra HD workflows, so customers can invest in them now and take advantage of incredibly powerful Ultra HD tools, while future proofing their workflows at the same time. We’ve also seen a huge explosion in the YouTube and social media markets both on the live streaming and post production sides and are eager to explore this further with attendees at IBC. Customers such as Hyper RPG are using our Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, ATEM Television Studio Pro 4K and ATEM Television Studio HD switchers and more to power live streams for its YouTube and Twitch channels. There is serious production work taking place behind the scenes on these streaming platforms, and we are excited that customers are turning to Blackmagic Design to support their workflows. Whether creating real-time content for YouTube or going up against tight deadlines in broadcast, our customers need to work faster than ever. With DaVinci Resolve 16’s new cut page, an alternate edit page with a streamlined interface and new tools, our customers have everything they need to get the job done quickly, all in one place. For example, global content creation agency C&I Studios is relying on the cut page as the studio puts out videos for Instagram and YouTube every single day. The cut page allows them to fly with quick edits, and the new quick export also lets them deliver directly to YouTube.
How do you approach each IBC show? How are you constantly evolving?
IBC is a great counterbalance to NAB because we get the chance to speak with customers who have been using our gear that was announced at NAB or earlier in the year. At NAB, we get great initial feedback from attendees on our newly announced products, then at IBC, we receive more real-world feedback as the customers have had a chance to implement the products in their workflows. Both types of feedback are valuable, and it’s how we keep evolving as a company: listening to customers’ ideas, pain points, workflows, etc. and taking that feedback into consideration as we develop our products.
What are you most looking forward to?
Connecting with customers in person is always at the top of our list. Another great factor in attending IBC for us is the location. The fact that it’s in Amsterdam means we get to connect with folks who might not have been able to attend NAB. It also helps us to better understand how workflows and trends are developing internationally.
What do you hope everyone will be talking about after the show?
We hope everyone comes away with a better understanding of 8K and what they can and should be doing now to future proof their workflows. With the Olympics in Tokyo next year and the NHK already broadcasting in 8K, as well as large digital signage displays working in the format, it will certainly be a much-discussed topic in the coming months. While some are still making the transition to 4K and Ultra HD, 8K may seem quite daunting, but the move to 8K won’t be far behind, and it’s important for folks to understand its applications and feasibility today to better plan for the future. They need to make sure they’re investing in feature-rich technologies that both fit today’s requirements, as well as tomorrow’s, so they are prepared for what’s to come.
